Kalakhet · Kumaon Himalayas · 6,000 ft
A private mountain residence by Divya & Rahul Mishra. Not a hotel. Not a homestay. A philosophy shaped into form.
"Āatman is more than a home — it is a philosophy shaped into form. Soul, Silence, and Balance — a way of living that breathes through every material, every line, every view."
— Rahul Mishra · Founder, Rahul Mishra Spaces
Perched at 6,000 feet in the Kumaon Himalayas, Āatman is the first architectural expression of Rahul Mishra Spaces — where couture became architecture, and nature became muse.
It stands poised between two vast valleys, encircled by Himalayan pine, deodar, and silver oak — a living cathedral of green. Three reserve forests breathe alongside it.
The eastern glass façade welcomes the first light as a daily act of renewal. Built from stone, timber, and steel — pure, recyclable materials. A structure that may one day return to the earth it rose from.
Every member of our team comes from the neighbouring villages. The ingredients come from local farms. The culture is not performed here — it is lived.
From the Sanskrit ātman — the innermost self. Every stone, timber, and meal carries intention. Architecture as a form of meditation. Built to awaken awareness of being.
No televisions. No city noise. Only birdsong at dawn, the crackle of a fireplace, deodar in the wind. Silence here is not the absence of sound — it is its own presence.
Rotated 99° east to welcome first light. Solar-powered. Rainwater harvested. A passive house that breathes in rhythm with the three reserve forests around it.
There is no schedule. Only the mountain's own rhythm — mornings crisp with possibility, afternoons golden and unhurried, evenings that slip gracefully into fire and stars.
Mornings open with a quiet tea ritual — warm sunlight on wooden chairs, birds moving through branches, Himalayan air scented with fresh blossoms. Seasonal fruits, artisanal teas, vibrant ceramics.
Through pine and deodar, guided by those who know every trail. Visit a traditional Kumaoni home. Share tea with a family. Walk terraced fields that have fed this land for centuries.
Sunlight through leaves. Wood-fired aromas. Traditional Kumaoni dishes from local ingredients. The mountains set an unhurried rhythm for the table.
Wood-fired oven on the deck. String lights warm the deodar. The quiet joy of making your own pizza. As the fire glows and the sky deepens, conversations linger.
Cinema at Āatman is not scheduled — it unfolds with the moment. Films come alive beneath a sky full of stars, surrounded by forest, firelight, and stillness.
Each suite takes its name from the trees and wild fruits of Kumaon. Each has its own light, its own texture, its own relationship with the mountain outside its window.
The largest suite at Āatman, with a private study lounge and a generous Himalaya-facing observation deck. A charming attic loft beneath a sloping wooden ceiling completes the experience for extended groups.
Warm, textural, timeless. Wrap-around balcony catching the soft evening sun.
Elevated, tranquil, filled with gentle mountain light and forest views.
Garden-like tranquility. Own living space, dining area, and kitchenette.
Serene, comforting, connected to the forest. Named for the cherished Himalayan wild berry.
Artisanal teas, seasonal fruits, vibrant ceramics by the pond.
On the orchard deck, beneath the walnut tree, or by the firepit.
Traditional mountain dishes, dappled shade, unhurried time.
In the garden or by the fireplace as the light softens.
Candlelit tables, curated menus, conversations that linger.
Walk gently through the forest, where stillness and breath restore what the mind forgets. The Japanese call it Shinrin-yoku.
In warmth and silence, the body softens, releases, and returns to balance.
A moment of intensity that awakens the body and sharpens the mind.
Subtle vibrations move through you, quieting the noise within. Sessions in the solarium or outdoors — where the forest becomes the soundscape.
Certified trainers for yoga, meditation, breathing & mindfulness — by request, indoors or outdoors.
A serene meditation space — no footwear, no phones, no music. Silent meditation only. The pooja space of the home.
Books on art, design, architecture, travel, and culture. An easel awaits painters. Quiet hours, deeply unstructured.
At 6,000 feet the sky opens fully. An in-house celestial telescope reveals what city living made you forget.
Āatman opens into a world most will never see. Village trails, artisan encounters, terraced fields, ancient temples. Led always by those who belong to this land.
A scenic trek to a traditional Kumaoni home. Meet the family. Experience regional flavours. Understand hospitality long before hotels existed.
Learn mountain recipes alongside our in-house chef. Ancient knowledge passed through taste.
An in-house telescope reveals constellations, planets, and the deep dark of the Himalayan sky.
Work the terraced fields. Feel the earth that feeds an entire way of life.
Binsar Mahadev (11 km), Kainchi Dham (44 km), Kasar Devi (70 km), Jageshwar (100 km). Sacred Kumaon, held with quiet devotion.
Bird and butterfly observation in reserve forest linked to Jim Corbett. Resident dogs Gogo, Gabbar & Kalia welcome you home.
"The Kumaon Hills are my ancestral home. To breathe this air again and experience the beauty of our culture via your incredible home is the rarest gift. Every detail mirrors the quiet unpretentious warmth of mountain life. The authenticity is the truest luxury. It's a homecoming."
"I think we found a gorgeous home in the most stunning landscape. From the moment we entered, we felt a positive vibe that was so calming in the most beautiful way."
"For the past 3 days you didn't just host us — you held us with warmth, care and quiet grace. What you have created isn't service. It is a feeling we will carry with us for years."
"Suhani and the entire staff went above and beyond each day. Our time here was filled with laughter, comfort, and lovely memories. We can't wait to return and experience it all again."
"Truly unforgettable… just like home. Apna Ghar ♡ In every small detail, we felt warm and deeply cared for. Your tireless effort never went unnoticed."
"Authenticity, warmth, and a deep stillness — Āatman has redefined what mountain hospitality can mean. We left renewed."
Āatman embodies Rahul Mishra's regenerative-development philosophy. Every choice — material, energy, employment — strengthens the ecology and community of Kalakhet rather than extracting from it.
Rainwater harvesting, a natural pond, and solar systems sustain the home year-round.
Non-air-conditioned, naturally ventilated. Rotated 99° east for first light and winter solar gain.
Built only of stone, wood, and steel — handcrafted on-site by local artisans.
The entire team — chef, gardeners, housekeeping, manager — comes from neighbouring villages, with full social benefits.
No drones. No commercial shoots without permission. No geotags shared, to protect the hamlet.
"Āatman is not a destination.
It is a philosophy of living slowly,
breathing deeply, and finding
beauty in stillness."
— Divya & Rahul Mishra
Set in Kalakhet, approximately 330 km from Delhi. The drive through Moradabad and Jim Corbett is itself a slow meditation — the world gradually quieting as the hills rise.
The final 200 metres approach through a gentle off-road forest trail — a small rite of arrival that the city cannot follow. An Innova or comparable SUV is recommended.
Āatman welcomes a limited number of guests each month to preserve the integrity of the experience. We respond within 24 hours.
Kindly refrain from sharing map pins or geotags of Āatman to protect the ecology and privacy of the hamlet.
